Born on 27th November 1952 into a Bengali Brahmin family in Jalpaiguri, Alokesh Lahiri aka Bappi Lahiri was an Indian singer, composer, actor and politician. His parents, Aparesh Lahiri and Bansuri Lahiri, both were Bengali singers and classical musicians. Kishore Kumar, the famous singer, was his maternal uncle. Bappi Ji was a self-made professional musician though.

Bappi Ji reached the peaks of fame in the Indian music industry with his unique disco-electronic music during the 80s and 90s. His soundtracks for movies like Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Sharaabi, Naukar Biwi Ka, Naya Kadam, Masterji, Bewafai, Maqsad, Suraag, Dance Dance and Commando received enormous success. The singing sensation was also a maestro of the tabla, piano, drums, guitar, saxophone, bongos and dholak.

Besides his superb music, Bappi Lahiri was also known for his signature attire which consisted of gold chains, golden embellishments, velvety cardigans and sunglasses. The crooner was admitted to Criticare Hospital with multiple complaints. He passed away on 15th February 2022 and shall be cremated by his son Bappa Lahiri on 17th February. Bappi Ji’s voluminous contributions will keep him alive in the hearts of his countless fans for all times to come.
